Electrical fires

Electric fires, what to look for
 
There are particular danger signs to look out for on all electrical items that you have/use in your home. Below is a list of some of the more common issues .
 
Plugs and socketskeep an eye out for the following:
Warm plugs or sockets, with burn marks, Fuses or breakers that blow frequently, this could indicate loose connections
Incorrectly wired plugs, sheath not going into the plug.
Is the flex securely held?
 
Cables and leads
The risks with cables and leads include
Getting frayed and damaged by running under carpets or being stood on.
Are they a trip hazard? Are they run next to hot water pipes?
Are you using to many multi way adaptors? A very common issue
 
Appliances
For electrical appliances, you should think about water and electricity in close proximity. So no flowers on the top of the TV.
 
Are sockets in the kitchen at risk of becoming wet? Think about when your children or grandchildren help you with the washing up. This is covered in Part P of the Building regulations and BS 7671, recognize the external influences, Children are classed as BA2 by the wiring regulations.
Don’t leave appliances plugged in unless they are designed to be left on, like a fridge.
Don’t put anything metal in the microwave.

Maintenance
Electrical appliances, especially ones that run at high speeds and contain motors, like washing machines, should be checked by a competent person.
 
Fuses
When you’re fitting or replacing a fuse, in a plug it’s important to use the correct size of fuse for the appliance this makes sure the appliance, cable and persons are safe
If you are not sure of the correct size then ask a competent person. Do not put a bigger fuse in the plug if it keeps blowing, get it checked.
For appliances up to 700 watts, use a 3 amp fuse
For appliances more than 700 watts, use a 13 amp fuse

Extension leads have a limit on how much current they can carry safely, so be careful not to overload them. If you do overload them then you increase the risk of a fire.
 
If you have an electrical fire
If there is an electrical fire, pull the plug out, or switch off the power at the fuse box if it is safe to do so. You must ensure that everyone is safe and call the fire brigade.
It is important that you never use water on an electrical fire, and don't take any risks with your safety, If in any doubt get out, stay out and call 999.
 
BS 7671 is concerned with safety of people, livestock and property.
